How to wash a silk shirt: A quick and easy guide

Preparation:

• Check the care label: Always follow the instructions on the care label of your silk shirt.
• Hand wash or machine wash: Silk prefers hand washing. If machine washing is allowed according to the label,choose a gentle cycle.
• Use the right detergent: Use only a mild silk or delicate detergent. Regular detergent can damage the fibers.

Hand washing:

1. Prepare a lukewarm bath: Fill a sink or basin with lukewarm water (max. 30°C/86°F).
2. Add silk detergent: Dissolve a small amount of silk detergent in the water.
3. Submerge the shirt: Lay the shirt in the water and let it soak for 3-5 minutes.
4. Press gently: Do not rub or scrub the shirt! Instead, press it gently together to loosen dirt.
5. Rinse thoroughly: Rinse the shirt several times with cold water until all traces of detergent are gone.
6. Dry: Lay the shirt flat on a towel and let it air dry. Avoid direct sunlight and heat.

Machine washing:

1. Use a mesh bag: Place the shirt in a mesh bag to protect it from damage in the machine.
2. Choose delicate cycle: Select the delicate or gentle cycle on your washing machine with a maximum of 30°C/86°F.
3. Reduce spin speed: Set the spin speed to a maximum of 800 rpm.
4. Avoid the dryer: Do not tumble dry the shirt. Let it air dry instead.

Additional tips:

• Stain removal: Always treat stains on silk immediately with a special silk stain remover.
• Vinegar as a softener: Add a teaspoon of vinegar to the final rinse water to soften the silk.
• Shape while drying: While still damp, lay the shirt flat to its desired shape and let it air dry. This will help prevent wrinkles.
